Fellowship Activities

 

ASIA Fellows awardees are placed at top-ranking research universities and non-academic institutions such as museums, archives or think tanks. Fellows should identify preferred placements in host countries. They may engage in an organized field research in the host country. Fellows are strongly encouraged to undertake some language training in their host country as part of facilitating their research. They are also provided the opportunities to present guest lectures, or to conduct seminars and workshops at the invitation of the host institutions.  After completion of their fellowship, fellows can apply for post-fellowship awards of three months to further their research in a country or region within Asia, or for short-term travel awards to make presentations at overseas conferences and meetings.

 

All fellows are required to attend the Orientation Program in July 2007, and the ASIA Fellows’ Annual Conference in July 2009 at which they present their research results to fellow awardees and to scholars from the country in which the conference is held.  They are also required to start the award by the end of December 2007. At the end of the fellowship, fellows must submit to the ASF office in Bangkok evidence of the results of their research project in the form of publications, photos of artistic works, audio/ video productions, etc.

§       Round-trip travel between home country or region and host country

Ø       Maintenance Allowance:

§       In-country living allowance to cover housing and other expenses.

N.B.  No travel nor living allowance will be provided for dependents

Ø       Limited accident and health insurance

Ø       Field Trip/Language Training Allowance:

§       For traveling within a host country, and a formal course on language training or with a private tutor in the host country    

Ø       Research Allowance:

§       For research-related costs, computer purchase and internet connectivity to communicate with colleagues, other ASIA Fellows, and to access the Asian Scholarship Foundation Website <http://www.asianscholarship.org>

Ø       Excess Baggage/Shipping Allowance

 

 

Selection Process

 

Regional review committees composed of leading scholars from participating countries and regions conduct an initial review of the applications. In mid-March, short-listed candidates are interviewed by the review committee for their region at meetings in Beijing, New Delhi, and Bangkok. (The Asian Scholarship Foundation covers the travel expenses of short-listed candidates.) The applications of recommended candidates are then forwarded to the multi-regional Board Management Committee which will make the final selection of ASIA Fellows Awards recipients by the end of May 2007.

1.       “The System of Chinese Classical Garden in the Comparison with the Royal Garden in Hue,” manager of a monument conservation center in Vietnam, hosted by Beijing Municipal Bureau of Parks, People’s Republic of China.

 

2.       “How Indian People Remember the Tsunami: An Anthropological Study,” Chinese lecturer, hosted by Madras Institute of Development Studies, Chennai, India.

 

3.       “Effects of Globalization in Plural Societies: A Case Study of Indonesia,” an associate professor from India, hosted by Center for Strategic and International Studies, Jakarta, Indonesia.

项目简介：

亚洲人奖学金基金会由福特基金会资助。亚洲人研究亚洲资助项目的目标是促进中国、南亚及东南亚国家之间的学术交流和知识共享。在中国，此项目资助中国学者到东南亚及南亚国家进行为期 6 至 9 个月的研究。

受资助者需自己在研究对象国联系确定接收单位。亚洲人研究亚洲资助项目鼓励受资助者在当地接受语言培训以帮助研究工作。研究期间可以在接收单位应邀进行客座讲座、学术研讨等。研究结束后，受资助者可以申请后续资助，在亚洲的一个国家或地区进行三个月的研究，或出席海外举办的学术会议并做会议发言。受资助者必须出席2007年7月的项目介绍会和2009年7月的项目年会，向其他受资助者和会议举办国的学者发表研究成果。受资助者必须在2007年12月底前开始项目研究。研究结束后，受资助者须将研究成果以出版物、图片、声频或视频作品等形式呈交给在曼谷的亚洲人奖学金基金会办公室。

 

资助内容：

1. 旅行资助：从受资助者居住地到研究对象国之间往返一次的费用；

2. 生活资助：在研究对象国的个人生活费用，包括住房和其他费用，不提供配偶或子女的费用；

3. 限额的意外和健康保险；

4. 实地考察/语言培训资助：在研究对象国的旅行费用和参加语言培训课程或请私人语言教师的费用；

5. 研究资助：研究相关费用，购买计算机、用以和同事、其它受资助者联络及访问亚洲人奖学金基金会网站的互联网使用费用；

6. 超重行李/行李运输资助。

 

申请资格：

1. 申请者必须为下列国家或地区的公民或居民：孟加拉、不丹、文莱、柬浦寨、中国、香港、印度、印度尼西亚、日本、老挝、马来西亚、马尔代夫、缅甸、尼泊尔、巴基斯坦、菲律宾、新加坡、韩国、斯里兰卡、台湾、泰国、和越南；

2. 取得硕士、博士学位 或 具同等学历－三年以上教学经验或五年以上工作经验；

3. 申请者年龄须不超过45周岁（含45周岁），以申请收集截止时间为限。但是，年龄界于45到50周岁的人如申请人类学领域的研究可以特殊考虑；

4. 可熟练使用英语或研究对象国语言；

5. 正在攻读学位和完成学位不满一年者不得申请。在过去的两年中曾接受过福特基金会资助者不得申请。

 

资助条件：

1. 不得申请在香港、日本、新加坡、韩国和台湾进行研究；

2. 不资助任何在受资助者本国或本地区进行的研究；

3. 研究期限必须是6至9个月。项目研究一旦开始，受资助者必须在研究对象国连贯完成研究工作。任何情况下不得将研究期限分开；

4. 南亚或东南亚国家的申请者可以申请在本地区的另一个国家研究，但申请到非本地区国家研究的申请者将被优先考虑（例如：申请到中国研究的印度学者或专业人士）；

5. 由于签证原因，申请者不应申请到与本国或本地区外交关系不畅的国家进行研究；

6. 本资助不支持以完成硕士或博士论文为目的的研究。

ASIA Fellows Awards 

~Asian Studies In Asia~

 

Funding and Administration

 

The Asian Scholarship Foundation (ASF) is funded by a grant from the Ford Foundation. Its office in Bangkok administers the ASIA Fellows Awards in the region with assistance from partner offices in Beijing, New Delhi, Manila, Hanoi, and Jakarta.

 

The ASF Board Management Committee is composed of twelve educational and public leaders from the People’s Republic of China, South and Southeast Asia, and Australia.  The Board Management Committee selects the fellows, oversees the program and makes policy decisions.

 

Goals and Objectives

 

The principal goal of the ASIA Fellows Awards is to increase the overall awareness of intellectual resources in the People’s Republic of China, and the countries of South and Southeast Asia and to contribute to the growth of long-range capabilities for cross-regional knowledge sharing.  The ASIA Fellows Awards seek to develop regional expertise, establish a multilateral network of Asian specialists from many disciplines, professional fields and countries, stimulate interdisciplinary research and inter-societal comparison, and contribute to new developments within existing area studies communities. The awards offer opportunities for outstanding young and mid-career Asian scholars, and professionals to gain knowledge of the countries in the region and an understanding of the contexts that shape global and regional issues through research. They enable the awardees to conduct research in a participating Asian country or region for six to nine months.

 

Eligibility 

 

1. Citizens of and residents in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, the Republic of Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

 

2. Master’s/Doctoral degree or equivalent professional training and experiences (minimum of 3 years of university teaching experiences for scholars or 5 years of work experience for professionals.)

 

3. Applicants must be 45 years old or younger at the time of the application deadline. However, those up to 50 years old proposing to do research in the field of Humanities may be given special consideration.

 

4. Proficiency in English or in the language of the host country appropriate to the proposed research project.

 

5. Those who are currently enrolled in a degree program, or have completed a degree program within the past 12 months, will not be eligible to apply. Those who were a recipient of a Ford Foundation fellowship grant within the last two years prior to the application is also ineligible..

 

conditions of the awards

 

1. The proposed research projects for the ASIA Fellows Awards can be carried out in only one participating country or region (except the applicant’s own) and under the following conditions:

a.       No applicant can propose to conduct their research in Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, South Korea or Taiwan.

 

b.       Applicants from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore cannot undertake research in each other’s countries.

 

c.        Applicants from Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan can only apply to conduct their research in Thailand, the host country of ASF.

 

2. Any part of the proposed project that will be done in the applicant’s own country or region will not be funded under the ASIA Fellows Awards.

 

3. The proposed grant period must be between 6-9 months. Once awarded, a fellow is required to conduct research at the proposed host country throughout the grant period. Splitting of the grant period or conducting research in the applicant’s own country or region during the proposed grant period is not allowed under any circumstances.

 

4. While an applicant from South or Southeast Asia may propose a research project in a country within his/her own region, preference is given to applicants who propose to conduct research in a region of Asia other than their own (e.g., an award to an Indian scholar or professional for research in China). 

 

5. Applicants should not plan to conduct their research in a country with which their home country has a difficult diplomatic relationship because of the uncertainties of securing an affiliation and obtaining a research clearance and visa for a long-term stay.

 

6. Fellowship awards are not for the purpose of completing requirements towards an academic degree (master’s thesis or doctoral dissertations).

 

        结束了，家里已经被我们收拾干净了，没想到来了二十个人，家里那个乱啊，空前的热闹，他们走了之后，整理照片，超级郁闷的是谁把我的杰作都给删了，那么多精彩的瞬间，那么多搞笑的电影，天！！！一晚上没睡着，乱！乱！乱！不知道是不是喝多了，可我没喝酒啊，是他们喝多了，二锅头喝多了，一句话--乱，但是好开心，就是要洗的碗多了点，

      曼龙快要回国了，我想开个farewell party for her,指不定什么时候才能见到她了，按照目前的状况是明年我是去不了美利坚合众国，所以在可以预测的范围内明年我们暂无相见的可能性很大。虽然以前参加过不少party，不过都是以品尝食物为主，这边人其实蛮无聊的，除了聊聊天，吃吃东西就没什么有意思的了，要知道在我们有限的英语能力范围内，实在是交流有限，入不了主流啊，sigh~~

     首先是写Invitation，给一些我和曼龙共同认识的朋友发邀请函，好在网络发达，来个群发，不过电话还是少不了的，感觉轻口说出来比较有诚意。接下来最重要是的food，考虑到要为十六个人做饭不是件易事，所以准备搞个传统的中国吃法--火锅，也正好解了我的馋，呵呵！来个buffet，快捷又方便，已经向外国友人征求好了意见，应该能接受，中国人自不在话下了，皆大欢喜，反正准备了两个火锅，辣的和海鲜味的，应该会照顾到大家的口味。不过我真是小看了采购这项任务，顶着太阳和曼龙，治国买了快六个小时的东西，累坏了，尤其是治国--唯一的男生，肩负着推车在凹凸不平的路上行驶的重任，回到家还要帮忙切4kg的鸡翅，腌上BBQ酱和其他的各种调料，这样烤出来的效果才会入味，并且外焦里嫩，口水ing，其他的暂且放到冰箱等待着我们的改造--记得厨师有个很好的称呼就是kitchen designer，题外话。最后要想想怎么规划整个过程，不至于那么无趣，这个正在思考中，方案正在不断的修改和改进。期待着周六晚上的party~~~

        今年是中秋节，终于为想念家人，朋友找个冠冕堂皇的借口了，每逢佳节倍思亲嘛，不过没有什么过节的气氛，中秋节就这么悄无声息地溜走了，想念的心却依然。。。和自己说声节日快乐！

     刚才在厨房做饭时，发现一切都那么陌生，才意识到搬到新家了。新家的厨房工具很全，客厅很宽敞，很适合开party，以后就可以呼朋唤友了，终于满足了下我的小小愿望。来canberra大半年，搬家已有四次，有个朋友说我是她看过最能折腾的单身，其实并不是我有搬家癖，只是我不喜欢将就，如果搬家能使各方面条件得到改善并且我能承担得起的话，我就会选择挪窝，为自己找个理由自我安慰一番，美其名曰换一种新的生活。

       无奈搬家并不是一件易事，首先要权衡利弊，考虑综合因素，就要会取舍，弄清楚自己想要什么。刚来的时候住homestay，那是抱着学语言的心态，可是可怕的食物和除了吃饭时有机会能说几句英文让我失望至极，于是在机缘巧合下突然通知我可以提前搬走（通常必须住满四周，否则不退房租），急匆匆地迁至一个离学校太远的地方，虽然房子不错，但是每天浪费了很多时间在路上，于是搬家的议程提上来了，从此寻遍canberra的各个区，但是由于缺乏社会经验，觉得每个房子都不错，房客也很好相处的样子，最终看到貌似老实的张宇航终于定下来搬到他们家，房子虽然旧点，但是胜在交通方便，后来事实也证明室友人都不错。挺感谢他们收留了我，不至于流落街头，难为赵瑜当初在手受伤的情况下打地铺一周，他们是坚决不采纳两个男生挤一床的意见，这个现在想想自己也确实挺不懂事的。随着时间的流逝，各种原因使我又重新搬家了，经过重新的整理房间，我扔掉了很多曾经以为对我很重要的东西，仿佛卸下了很多包袱似的，或许人生就是这样，在兜兜转转中不断的重新上路。新的生活在等着我，我要以最好的状态去迎接。。。
